Electronic structure of the self - trapped sodium chloride exciton in

چکیده

The electronic structure of the relaxed exciton in sodium chloride is investigated using a Hartree-Fock method. The model concentrates on a cluster of two sodium and two chlorine ions surrounded by an array of point charges. The excited states of the exciton and the associated transitions are discussed. The results are compared with experiment and with the phenomenological models proposed by earlier workers. A number of features are confirmed, giving a general picture close to that of Kabler and his co-workers. One problem emerges, since it proves possible to understand the U luminescence or the n luminescence, but not both at present. Possible reasons are discussed. In other respects. there is good agreement with experiment, especially for the optical transitions starting from the lowest triplet state of the exciton.

Electronic structure of the self-trapped exciton in alkali fluorides and chlorides

We report pseudopotential calculations for the relaxed exciton in alkali fluorides and chlorides, with emphasis on NaCl. These calculations supplement earlier Hartree-Fock calculations by permitting investigation of a number of specific features. We have studied the more extended and higher energy excitations of the electron associated with the exciton, and we have considered a wider range of h...

Electronic structure and luminescence of CsI : Na

Calculations are performed on several aspects of the luminescence of pure CsI and CsI: Na. These include electronic-structure calculations by both pseudopotential and semiempirical molecular-orbital methods, as well as lattice-configuration studies. The results suggest that the main observed emission in CsI: Na at 2.95 eV involves the recombination of a self-trapped exciton immediately adjacent...

Excitons and Radiation Damage in Alkali Halides

The quantum mechanical description of atomic spectra was the beginning of a new era of quantum physics which today is the theoretical basis of nuclear and solid state physics, chemistry, and biochemistry [1,2]. Quantum mechanics opened also a new look to solid state physics which will be illustrated by the development of the conception of excitons [3]. One of the basic quantum mechanical proble...

Lattice rearrangement induced by excitons in cryocrystals

The self-trapping of excitons in atomic cryocrystals induces a variety of atomic processes including mass diffusion, and defect formation [1–4]. The basis for the physics of these phenomena is a concentration of the electronic excitation energy within a volume about that of a unit cell. Release of the energy can induce different kinds of lattice rearrangement. The above phenomena have been the ...

Interrelation of structural and electronic properties of InGaN/GaN quantum dots using an eight-band k·p model

We present an eight-band k ·p -model for the calculation of the electronic structure of wurtzite semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and its application to indium gallium nitride (InxGa1−xN) QDs formed by composition fluctuations in InxGa1−xN layers. The eight-band k·p -model accounts for strain effects, piezoelectric and pyroelectricity, spin-orbit and crystal field splitting. Exciton binding ene...
